Day 3 Centro Linguistico Maya

Our excursion yesterday was to San Antonio Aguacalientes, an indigenous village near Antigua. We took a school bus to a cooperativa de mujeres, where they specialize in making textiles and colorful fabric costumes. They spoke to us about traditions in their community specifically, weddings. A few in our group dressed in the typical clothing for those in that village. Interesting. As we were traveling there, I spoke with one of the teachers at our language school about Tropical Storm Agatha, where many homes were destroyed and lives lost in a nearby community. When it rains heavily here, in mountainous communities, rushing rivers result.

One particular woman, a grandmother was swept away, holding her day old infant granddaughter. The granddaughter survived, but only because the grandmother held her close and didn't let her go. They were swept away and found later, when the rand other, still alive at that point, breathed her last breath of satisfaction that the baby would live and be ok. As I listened to her tell this beautiful story, I was thinking how in moments of distress, we need to completely surrender to Him, and God will intervene and take over. No need for alarm, although it may be raining in the afternoon, it is nothing like a Tropical Storm here. I just really found that a beautiful story of how important family is in this culture.

Salsa dance class is this afternoon at 5, should be fun with 17 of us there, and others from the school as well. Tomorrow we visit the coffee plantation, hopefully it won't be raining. It has rained every afternoon since we have been here....but we are still enjoying it nonetheless. We hear that heat is on it's way back home in Visalia, keep cool, ok? We love and miss you all!
