So many new adventures here in Antigua each day. Thank you for your prayers and support as some of the kids have been feeling a bit exhausted and maybe a little homesick. We haven't seen rain for a few days now..and Antigua is amazing without rain. The air can feel a bit humid, but the temperature is always in the mid to upper 70's. Ahhhhhh....
Your kids have been enjoying their classes and their teachers and are learning every day. Some are using every day games like Scrabble and Uno to aid in the process, others are doing homework each night, and most are speaking complete conversations with their teachers.
Yesterday in the afternoon we went to Common Hope or Familias de Esperanza, and toured the nonprofit organization aiding the communities nearby with education , healthy care and child sponsorship for their families. It was very interesting as the social worker, Lys, led us through and gave us the tour in English. We were able to see some of the kids, meet some of the teachers, and see their clinic.
This morning we had our final day of classes and each student was given a certificate upon completion of their week here and evaluation of the work they did. When language school was over for the day, I had purchased a cake and we were able to sing together happy birthday in Spanish to Coby Thomas, who celebrates a birthday tomorrow!
This afternoon, in about 20 minutes we are meeting to hike to the Hill of the Cross/Cerro de la Cruz that overlooks the city. It is paved and a minor climb to an overview of the city and a good opportunity for pictures. Be looking on the Guatemala 2014 Facebook page for updates.
Tomorrow we will visit La Pinada, Sunday bilingual church and some more touring of Antigua, and Sunday evening we plan to move to Magdalena. On Monday morning students will be working with some avocado trees Students International is harvesting. I will be at the airport to welcome the 4 others arriving in the morning on Monday, and bringing my oldest daughter Caitlin to the airport to fly home.
Hope you are getting these blogs.. We just returned from our hike to the cross..so more pictures. Stay tuned to the Guatemala 2014 page.
